Brief Blasts...

Here are three more brief blasts from albums already covered by other writers at Live 4 Metal, but ended up in my lap anyway. First up is Las Vegas' Avenger Of Blood, one of the more well known bands that is a part of the whole "retro thrash" movement currently occupying everyone's time. I'm still convinced that this movement is a one trick pony and will soon fade, but the band's debut "Death Brigade" is enjoyable nonetheless. You will immediately be thinking "Terrible Certainty" when you hear the title track...

Heavy Artillery Records

Next is hyper technical death metal/ grindcore outfit Brain Drill from California with their debut full-length on Metal Blade Records entitled "Apocalyptic Feasting". Frankly, this one is a monster with everything you'd want from the genre; that is, bludgeoning, all over the map riffs, bass lines galore, stop on a dime time changes, all out blasts, hyperkinetic enthusiasm and gore hilarity, you name it. Highly recommended!

Metal Blade Records

Finally, here's Italy's Necromessiah, a blackened thrash act with a definite old school vibe that works. Would you consider this example as a part of the "retro thrash" genre? You decide. Here's a track from their second full-length, "Antiklerikal Terroristik Death Squad".

Blasphemous Underground Productions

In closing, I had to miss the recent Exodus show due to a nasty case of the flu...I'm not sure what my next show will be...

Sorry, songs removed.

I liked Avenger of blood, but nothing new. Braindrill was good at first and then after a few tracks it just seemed to blend together.

That Necromessiah was pretty cool. I don't think it's part of today's "retro thrash" thing, even though the sound is both retro and thrash. I think that the whole super-underground blackened strain of thrash has been going all this time. They're just as unoriginal as today's retro thrash, but at least they're not trendy about it. I mean, the presentation here is telling - this is very much like black metal-esque imagery, and the logo is even Possessed-like. No nods to white hi-tops, photo collages, Ed Repka artwork, "party vibes", etc. These guys are keeping it grim, and I kind of respect that more than all these new jacks who'll be playing some other style of music in 3 years.

Mark, Avenger of Blood was enjoyable and I enjoyed your review, as well. Brain Drill sort of grows on you if you're into the whole hyper-technical death metal thing.

Cosmo, agreed. Necromessiah reminds me of Aura Noir or Audiopain and resides out of the retro thrash movement. In my opinion, Warbringer is the only band that will last from that scene and they weren't all that special live a few months ago.

For the record...Death Brigade is not Avenger of Bloods debut, their debut is Complete Annihilation. This thrash movement isnt really new, just kicking in, its been around since probably 1998, but glad you're catching up to it ;] keep searching man, lots of good stuff coming out of it.

Ah, I stand corrected regarding Avenger Of Blood.

My reference to "retro thrash" refers to Heavy Artillery Records' roster as well as the bands connected to that movement such as Fueled By Fire, Bonded By Blood, and so on.
